PIN-UP'S & EROTICA

-89-

This deck was published by Alexander Lutkovski from Novosibirsk, Russia. This publisher has produced many decks, often with erotic designs by Russian artists, some with redrawn reproductions of famous erotic decks like Philibert's Casanova deck and some with images from WWII propaganda decks. He has also produced his own line of Coca Cola decks.
We have a few of his decks in our collection, but that's not because of the quality. That is usually poor. His decks are printed on thin, see-through, card and we suspect that they are all laser printed. We call them "homemade" here. But sometimes there's an interesting one. Like this deck with artwork by the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. His work has always had an attraction for us. The elongation of figures or the sometimes mask-like faces are typical for his art.

For this deck the publisher must have rounded up pictures of all the nudes that Modigliani has ever produced. Probably from one or more books, as the printing resolution is high. He advertised the deck as "pin-up", so it was probably rather the nude than the artistic aspect that inspired him for this publication. This deck could have been in the Art&Cards section, had it not been for the back design. It's a bit disrespectful to the artist to use a calendar as basic design and this underlines the pin-up/erotic intention to this publication.
