Khajuraho is the name of a small town in India, some 600 km southeast of Delhi. The town has the largest group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their erotic sculptures. The Khajuraho temples were build between 950 and 1150. Originally there were 80 temples, but a mere 25 have survived the Muslim invaders and the overgrowing jungle. The temples are fine examples of Indian architecture and the sculptures evenly of the explicit depiction of sexual life in the medieval times. Quite a difference when compared with the European "dark ages".
The sculptures are only found on the outside of the temples and not inside, near the deities.

The site is often referred to as the Kamasutra temple, but the sculptures do not show in any way the sexual positions as described in the Kamasutra. They mostly show round-breasted women, swinging their hips in erotic dancing, putting up make-up, washing their hair or unknotting their girdles.
