PIN-UP'S & EROTICA

-19-

Heavy Metal is the name of an American magazine with fantasy comics and the front-cover often showed scarcely dressed women in an alien world.
This deck was printed in China and published in the US in 2007. Each card has a different image, most of them represent strong and sexy women in a fantasy world, but some have an almost classic pin-up design. The artwork was probably done by more than one artist, as there are a few recognizable differences in technique and style. But there are also a few cards which looked familiar. One of them is the Jack of Clubs. We found that the design was used in another Chinese deck, which was published by the Sa Rui company Shanghai (see page 7).
To compare we show this card here on the left. However this deck holds two more cards, that were also used for this Heavy Metal deck. On the 9 of Hearts from the Sa Rui deck the same design was used as on the the 9 of Hearts here and the 4 of Spades here is a mirrored version of the 5 of Spades from the Sa Rui deck. On the box of the deck below the copyrights were reserved by Heavy Metal in 2007.
So probably the Sa Rui company has misused these 3 images for their, later published deck.
Of course, coming from China, the Heavy Metal copyright needed some checking, but it seems to be a valid copyright.

There are a good number of illustrations from Heavy Metal front covers depicted and also other artwork that was in the magazine. We have given the name of the artist on the 27 cards, of which we could find an illustration on the Heavy Metal website. If there's a date, then the illustration was used on the front cover of that magazine, and if there's a title, then the illustration was elsewhere in one of the magazines. Here's what we have found......
