FLIBUSTE -1-

The following scans were send in by Pascal Pette from Paris, France.

It's always nice to see pre-prints.
They shed light on the way cards were made and the b/w shows the essential design in a "naked", but much stronger way.
These were obviously made for the original Delluc deck.

Here below is the King of Clubs mirrored. Why? Now it can be matched with the adjoining woodblock that Pascal has recently (September 2007) found on a French flea market. On the backside of the woodblock is the signature of H. Renaud, the engraver of the deck and the text "refusé" (refused). It's obviously a trial block.

There are some clear distinctions with the final version. There's no crown above the suit sign and in the design itself there's no belt. Besides that the head and mouth show differences, just like the knot in the necktie and the position of the gun. It's nice to see how the different stages of the final designs were done.
